The camp had 19 kids in attendance.
It was specifically designed to mentor underprivileged and disadvantaged kids ages 10-12 from the Troop L area. We coordinated the search for applicants with several local churches, La Department of Child Services, Juvenile Probation, and Child Advocacy Groups. The majority of the kids were from single-parent homes, foster homes or living with grandparents/relatives. A few of them were on juvenile probation.
We were able to mentor the kids by showing them a side of law enforcement they had never seen before. The activities of the week were:
- Global Wildlife Center tour
- Shell Training Center – water and fire safety training
- Us Customs air unit – tour
- LSP Academy “Cadet Experience”
- Us coast guard helicopter visit and demo
- Youth Camp Olympics
They were very upset the camp was over.
“We saw several kids come in with horrible attitudes toward police; but were crying at the end of the week because the camp was over.
Please convey our thanks to the Louisiana Trooper Foundation for the support and opportunities to serve these kids.”
